In November 2023 retired Oklahoma firefighter Sean Lawless (The Lawless Tide) lucked into one of the best striped bass bites we’ve ever seen on the South Shore of Long Island. He was fishing with Nate Matthews, Editor-in-Chief of Salt Water Sportsman, who lives in the area and called him up last minute to hit a window in the weather. The bait was thick, acres of bunker sucked tight to the beach by a week of light, offshore winds, then pinned in place by massive schools of migrating stripers, pods of humpback whales, and marauding packs of bluefin tuna.
Sean’s a southern boy and this was his first time fishing for stripers in the Northeast. The weather was cold — lows in the 20s, highs in the low 40s, but the action was hot, and he spent two days pulling big bass off the bait. We also fished the beach, where he pulled in his first ever striper from the surf.
Sean Lawless (The Lawless Tide)
Sean Lawless was born and raised in landlocked Tulsa, Oklahoma and started fishing in Florida in 2017. From catching pompano on the beach to blackfin tuna in his kayak and bonita off the jetties, Sean shows his viewers everything Florida’s fishery has to offer.
