Trophy Pelagics in Pensacola

“The early bird gets the worm” is an old adage that proved true for creators John McLean (Big John Outdoors) and Jack Moran (Yakin’ with Jack) during a late spring fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. The team capitalized on a calm weather window and took their Mako 214CC offshore to blue water, aiming to land a trophy wahoo. Wahoo bite is best in low-light conditions, so the team had to make the morning hours count.

After an hour of high-speed trolling, John and Jack had just landed a cow mahi-mahi when the Penn International 30W started to sing, with line peeling off the reel rapidly. A second strike on a different rod followed, prompting the team to scramble to keep both fish on the lines. It wasn’t long before a 70-pound wahoo and a 30-pound king mackerel were gaffed and brought on board. Back at the dock, the team cleaned their catch and took the fillets to The Sandbar, a local favorite restaurant, for a catch-and-cook feast.

SWS Creator Team

John McLean (Big John Outdoors)
At 6 feet 9 inches tall, “Big” John McLean was the tallest goalie to ever play professional hockey. Forced to retire due to injuries in 2017, he founded a guide service, Big John Shark Fishing Adventures. He is very active in shark conservation and tagging sharks through NOAA’s Apex Predator Program.

Jack Moran (Yakin’ with Jack)
Jack Moran grew up in Pensacola fishing a local catfish farm with his grandfather. His love for saltwater fishing began on the piers and bridges of Pensacola, but quickly launched into the Gulf of Mexico when he discovered the adrenaline rush of going for a sleigh ride in a kayak.
