Step 1: Wrap the hook shank with the lead wire or nontoxic equivalent along the entire straight section up to the eye.

Step 2: Tie in six strands of smoke Ultra Hair at the bend in the hook.

Step 3: The wing and belly must be tied in layers, starting at the bend of the hook and working toward the eye. Start on top, with a few strands of smoke-colored Ultra Hair and a few strands of pearl Flashabou, extending beyond other materials by about 1/8-inch. Then just in front, about midshank, tie in a few strands of clear violet Ultra Hair. On the bottom of the shank, tie in a small clump of white rabbit fur cut from a zonker strip.

Step 4: Back on top, tie in a few strands of cocoa (reddish-brown) Ultra Hair about three-quarters of the way down the shank. Under that, tie in another small clump of rabbit fur.

Step 5: Just behind the eye, tie in a few more strands of cocoa hair, followed by two or three strands of white Krystal Flash, topped with a’few strands of light olive-brown Bozo hair or equivalent. This treatment gives the color and sheen similar to that brassy glint on the fishs back. To the side add a silver stripe with Flashabou and tie in the final piece of rabbit fur underneath.

Step 6: Form a head with thread, attach 2 1/2-mm eyes (I use gold mostly) and put a final coat of epoxy on the head. Extend the epoxy on top slightly beyond the eye. Make sure the fur stays clean and loose while tying and stop the head-coating right below the eye to maximize the motion of the rabbit-fur belly.
