The Gulf of Mexico comes alive in the summer. Anglers willing to dodge thunderstorms are often rewarded with a variety of pelagic and reef species. Capt. John McLean spent several days in the Gulf on his Mako 214CC, aiming to capitalize on the summertime bite. On day one, John was joined by Capt. David Miller for a full day of dropping baits in 2,000 feet of water in search of swordfish. They successfully caught and released a juvenile swordfish and lost another at the leader. On day two, the team spent a quick morning limiting out on red snapper but still made it back in time for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels airshow near Pensacola Beach. On day three, John was joined by fellow content creator Jack Moran to take advantage of the stellar red snapper bite during the extended season in the Gulf.
John McLean (Big John Outdoors)
At 6 feet 9 inches tall, “Big” John McLean was the tallest goalie to ever play professional hockey. Forced to retire due to injuries in 2017, he founded a guide service, Big John Shark Fishing Adventures. He is very active in shark conservation and tagging sharks through NOAA’s Apex Predator Program.
Jack Moran (Yakin with Jack)
Jack Moran grew up in Pensacola fishing a local catfish farm with his grandfather. His love for saltwater fishing began on the piers and bridges of Pensacola, but quickly launched into the Gulf of Mexico when he discovered the adrenaline rush of going for a sleigh ride in a kayak.
