Chasten Whitfield, 14, from Bradenton, Florida, scored her very first dolphin and even her first ever sailfish while fishing off Pompano Beach with George Poveromo aboard his Mako 284, MARC VI. Chasten was the winner of the 2013 Sperry Top-Sider Salt Water Sportsman Kids contest, and this special two-day trip.
Joining Chasten were her mother, father and younger brother, with Carl Grassi assisting Poveromo with boat duties. Team Chasten proved real troopers on the first day, hanging tough in four-to-six-foot seas and bouts of heavy rain while catching dolphin and amberjack. The second day, the ocean was flat and the sky bright. Chasten went on to score a nice dolphin on eight-pound class Penn spin tackle, and then her first sailfish on a Penn 12-lb class spinning outfit after a spirited 28 minute fight.
Needless to say, Chasten Whitfield is still walking on water after that trip!
