Q: I’m having trouble making long casts with intermediate lines, especially clear lines with bulky or weighted flies. Overlining the rod doesn’t seem to help when I’m throwing in a stiff breeze with a frustrated guide. It all goes to hell in a handbasket! Any suggestions?

A: I have never heard of this problem, Jeff. Because the intermediate line is thinner and has more concentrated weight, it is less air resistant and should cast farther and easier, especially in a breeze. The problem may be that you cast certain tapers with your WF-floating lines well and use different intermediate-line tapers. This is the first thing I would check.
