Q: I fish the offshore drilling wells, and we often hook fish that get well into the backing. Is there a knot you can attach to the reel shaft that is as strong as the backing?

A: There is only one knot I know that will accomplish what you are looking for. Make a Bimini twist in the backing end. Wrap the doubled Bimini loop around the spool shaft at least twice and finish with a Uni-knot or Duncan loop.
