2016 Fishing Boat Buyers Guide: Insetta 45

You’ll surely appreciate the offshore-racing catamaran heritage of the Insetta 45, evidenced in its tunnel and stepped-hull design.

After building and selling a $100 million electronics firm, Victor Insetta turned (returned, really) to cruising and boatbuilding. Soon, Insetta, who is trained in both physics and economics, was pursuing his longtime dream of mating an offshore-racing hull to the functionality of an open-deck design.

The result was a rugged, fast, comfortable center-console catamaran with a 1,000-mile diesel range, at home inshore and offshore. Its name? The Insetta 45.

Insetta Boatworks, located in St. Marys, Georgia, has a simple philosophy: use the highest quality materials and best workmanship possible to produce some of the best boats on the market.

Full-beam bulkheads span chine to chine and keel to gunwale. The one-piece deck is not only bonded to the hull around the sheer line, shoe-box style, it is also cradled by and bonded to each of the bulkheads. The hull and deck effectively become a rugged, robust one-piece unit ready for anything offshore.

Each fiberglass part IB produces is vacuum-infused, creating laminates that are both lightweight and strong. The company uses only epoxy vinylester resin for strength and closed-cell PVC foam core that will not absorb water, even if punctured. The few components not produced in house are held to the same high standards.

The boat is stable and smooth-riding, at anchor or when running wide open — which can be 60 mph ahead of 1,200 outboard horses! If you have different goals, you can mete out just over a gallon of diesel per 2 miles of run with an optional twin 370 hp diesel I/O package.

En route, at speed low or high, the one-piece aluminum hardtop with a built-in laminated-glass windshield offers unfettered vision, as well as protection from spray, rain and wind.

The 45 offers space as well as stability, with the twin hulls translating into elbow room that anglers and divers, as well as cruisers and family boaters, can enjoy. Tackle storage is widespread and roomy. The wide helm welcomes big-screen electronics; within the console, you’ll find a full-size berth, head and galley.

Behind the scenes is equipment up to the toughest marine task: LED lighting, 316 stainless-steel fittings and fasteners, yacht-grade pumps, glass mat batteries, and state-of-the-art electronics with touch-screen interfaces.

It all adds up to a comfortable, fast, seaworthy cat!
